IPTV atau Internet Protocol Television adalah sistem televisi digital yang dikirim menggunakan internet protocol .Dalam bahasa yang lebih umum Definisi IPTV sendiri adalah sistem televisi yang dikirim melalui traditional Broadcast dan format kabel,diterima oleh penonton melalui jaringan komputer.

Awalnya IPTV disebut Protocol television atau Telco TV. IPTV secara umum adalah pengiriman siaran dari TV , film,audio,teks dan konten video on demand melawati suatu jaringan privat yang dikirmkan melalui jaringan berbasis IP(internet Protocol) untuk menyediakan kualitas layanan yang baik.

Pada tahun 1994, World Newss Now disiarkan oleh Stasiun Televisi ABC merupakan acara televisi pertama yang disiarkan lewat internet dengan menggunakan CU-SeeMe videoconferencing. pendirian Precept Software oleh Judith Estrin dan Bill Carrico menimbulkan istilah IPTV yang pertama kali pada tahun 1995


Salah satu kelebihannya adalah penyatuan system transmisi televisi dan IP sekaligus yang menggunakan infrastruktur IP tanpa harus investasi tambahan untuk area dan tower/hub transmisi, ijin frequency, engineer, perangkat transmisiatau yang lainnya. Berikutnya jaringan IP memungkinkan untuk broadcast lebih banyak fungsi dan content (siaran).

Pada system transmisi televisi / jaringan satelit biasa yang menggunakan technology video brodacast, semua channel secara terus menerus dipancarkan kepada penonton, namun hanya satu content channel yang pada umumnya dilihat satu penonton dan mengganti channel bila menginginkan content yang lain.

Dalam perkembangannya, IPTV masih memiliki kekurangan karena bergantung dengan jaringan internet kualitas siaran bisa menurun, seperti gambar siaran yang terutus-putus karena kualitas jaringan yang kurang baik.

Tetapi dengan berbagai macam layanan IPTV serta semakin berkembangnya teknologi, bukan tidak mungkin dimasa mendatang IPTV menggantikan Siaran Televisi yang ada sekarang ini.
